Iowa's people gather in a few places and thin out quickly between them, so each guide covers its city and the towns that realistically search alongside it. Read the one nearest you first, then the one next door.

Not Close To Any Of The Five?
Plenty of Iowa members live well away from the five metros. These are the places people most often ask about, and the guide that fits each drive best.
- Ames and Story County. Iowa State keeps a steady population of students and staff, and Des Moines is about thirty minutes down I-35 — so the Des Moines guide covers your likeliest drive.
- Ankeny, West Des Moines and the other suburbs. In every practical sense these belong to the Des Moines metro. Start with that guide and keep your radius snug.
- Cedar Falls and Waterloo. UNI and the Black Hawk County metro sit at the northern end of I-380, about an hour from Cedar Rapids. They have a guide of their own now, and the Cedar Rapids guide is the natural next read south.
- Dubuque. High on the Mississippi where Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin meet, Dubuque is roughly as far from Cedar Rapids as from the Quad Cities, so read both the Cedar Rapids and the Davenport guides.
- Mason City and North Central Iowa. Cerro Gordo County and the towns around Clear Lake are the longest drive from any metro. I-35 heads south to Ames and Des Moines in under two hours, so a wide radius is simply the honest setting up here.
- Council Bluffs and the southwest. Across the Missouri from Omaha, with I-29 running north to Sioux City. Members here routinely search over the river into Nebraska; the Sioux City guide explains how a cross-border search works.
Setting Your Radius
The Interstate Decides A Lot.
There are really two kinds of Iowa search, and the right setting depends on which one you're doing.
Inside a metro
In Des Moines, the Corridor or the Quad Cities, most of the people you could meet live within twenty or thirty minutes of each other. A tight radius returns a workable list, a first coffee is easy to fit into a weeknight, and you can let distance sorting do the heavy lifting.
Between the metros
Out in the counties — the northwest, the southern tier along the Missouri line, the long stretch of North Central Iowa — the interests are identical but the people sit further apart. Follow the nearest interstate instead of drawing a blind circle — the I-80 band through the middle, I-35 if you live north or south of Des Moines, I-380 in the east, I-29 along the Missouri. An hour each way is normal here, and nobody will think it odd that you made the trip.
